Project 5: Impacts of Water Conservation on Sewerage Systems

What is the impact of widespread water efficiency measure on sewerage infrastructure downstream? How do we provide appropriate knowledge and tools for making this assessment?

Led by

Project Description

This project seeks to investigate impacts of water conservation on sewerage infrastructure. The aim is to provide decision-makers and asset planners with the necessary tools and knowledge to understand and plan for the impacts of water conservation measures on sewer networks effectively. Primary outputs include:

  • Easy-to-use pamphlet – A document that summarises the impacts of various water-saving scenarios and the key considerations for wastewater systems when planning various water efficiency measures.

  • PySIMDEUM – An open-source Python package for modelling residential water demand and wastewater discharge (the water demand version of the tool was originally developed by KWR).

  • Rapid Assessment Tool – A Power BI dashboard for assessing the impacts of low-water-use developments on sewer networks.

  • Assessment of Impact on Sewage Treatment Works – Coming soon.

Sewer Impacts Pamphlet: An easy-to-use guide to the impacts of water use strategies on sewerage

Several UK water companies are making great efforts to reduce water consumption but often those planning water efficiency measures have little understanding of the potential impacts on sewerage infrastructure downstream. The tools and knowledge for assessing these impacts have been made available through academic research but are not in a form that is easy-to-use by the water industry.

This pamphlet displays the information and methods available to assess these impacts in a format that is accessible for decision making.

Py-SIMDEUM®: Open-source tool for simulating future water use in your catchment

To enable users to model catchment-specific impacts of water conservation measure on their downstream infrastructure, we have created an open-source Python package for modelling residential water demand and wastewater discharge, Py-SIMDEUM® (water demand element originally developed by KWR).

Py-SIMDEUM® enables simulation of future water use on an appliance-specific basis so users can accurately investigate the impacts of targeted water-reduction strategies without the need to assume a global effect over the entire flow pattern. This tool includes features for simulating water quality and temperature and can create an output that connects to the InfoWorks ICM drainage modelling software.

Rapid Assessment Tool: High-level insight to impacts of water efficiency strategies

A Rapid Assessment Tool has been developed to enable high level investigations of various water use scenarios. It is a PowerBI® dashboard tool that allows users to define water-saving strategies on an appliance-specific basis and view the impact on the resulting flow and water quality parameters.

This tool is designed to support go/no-go decision making and support the investigation of which might be the most appropriate water saving strategy for a given case.
