Building Standards Part G Consultation: EWSC Response
The Enabling Water Smart Communities (EWSC) project team welcomes the opportunity to respond to the MHCLG consultation “Reducing the prevalence of private estate management arrangements” considering its work examining how Integrated Water Management (IWM) can be embedded within new housing developments, and how water-related infrastructure can be effectively stewarded over the long term.
Our response draws on insights from across the EWSC partnership and highlights the importance of clearer and more consistent standards for drainage and water management infrastructure, alongside stronger alignment between planning policy, regulatory frameworks and adoption arrangements. Current approaches can create uncertainty over responsibility for assets such as sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), which in turn can present barriers to adoption and long-term management.
We therefore support reforms that provide greater clarity on infrastructure standards, strengthen adoption pathways for assets that deliver public or network benefits, and enable more integrated approaches to water management in new communities.
